The shift is structural and likely permanent. US companies in automotive, electronics, medical devices, aerospace, and consumer goods are relocating manufacturing from China and other Asian locations to Mexico, driven by a combination of geopolitical risk reduction, supply chain security concerns, USMCA trade advantages, and a narrowing labor cost differential as Chinese wages have risen sharply.
The economic effects on both countries are significant. Mexico's manufacturing sector is experiencing its fastest expansion in two decades, with foreign direct investment at record levels. Border cities including Monterrey, Tijuana, and Saltillo are experiencing construction booms as factories multiply. The Mexican peso has appreciated 15% against the dollar over two years, reflecting the investment inflows.
For American consumers, nearshored products are arriving faster, with less supply chain disruption risk, and at modestly higher prices that most buyers appear willing to pay for reliability. The average "Mexico premium" for a nearshored product is estimated at 4-7% β less than most forecasts suggested.
