Microsoft has officially announced Windows 12, and it is a more dramatic departure from Windows 11 than any previous Windows version transition. The new operating system is built around three pillars: AI-first design, zero-trust security architecture, and a completely redesigned interface that responds to natural language.
The most controversial element is the hardware requirement. Windows 12 requires a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit) capable of at least 40 TOPS of AI performance. This requirement means approximately 600 million of the world's Windows PCs β including many machines purchased as recently as 2022 β are not eligible for the upgrade. For US consumers, this translates to a likely $400-$900 PC replacement decision for a large portion of the 170 million American Windows users.
The AI integration is pervasive. Windows 12 includes an ambient AI layer called Recall that remembers everything you have done on your PC and lets you find it through natural language search. "Show me the spreadsheet I was working on Tuesday afternoon" actually works.
Windows 12 will ship in fall 2026. Microsoft has confirmed Windows 11 will receive security updates through 2028, giving users two years to plan the transition.
