Boeing has delivered the first 737 MAX 10 aircraft to American Airlines, marking what company CEO Kelly Ortberg called "the beginning of Boeing's new chapter." The delivery, conducted at Boeing's Renton, Washington factory before a crowd of 2,000 employees and airline executives, is symbolically significant as the culmination of years of safety overhauls following the two fatal MAX crashes that killed 346 people.
The MAX 10 β the largest and most fuel-efficient variant of the 737 family β carries 230 passengers and burns 20% less fuel per seat than the aircraft it replaces. American Airlines has ordered 100 MAX 10s and expects to save $3 million per aircraft annually in fuel costs versus its aging 757 fleet.
Boeing's manufacturing reforms have been extensive. A new quality management system with 400 additional inspection checkpoints has been implemented across all facilities. Third-party auditors conduct unannounced inspections monthly. And a whistleblower protection program has been strengthened following the congressional investigations that revealed a culture of pressure to suppress safety concerns.
The recovery is far from complete. Boeing's order backlog remains 6-8 years, but monthly delivery rates are now climbing back toward pre-crisis levels, and Wall Street has upgraded the stock three times in the past six months.
